Rio Carnaval Expo. The Avenida is now here

The greatest show on Earth, as the Rio de Janeiro Carnival is known, is a celebration capable of transforming music, dance, visual arts, ancestry, technology, labor, and imagination into a collective experience of monumental scale.

Behind every parade lies a universe that begins long before the Avenida. It is found in the rehearsal halls and workshop sheds, in the communities and ateliers, in the hands of those who sew, build, compose, play, dance, design, organize, and transform an idea into a spectacle. Thousands of people and diverse skills come together to make Sapucaí happen.

Rio's Carnival is an expression of Brazil's cultural power. A space where Black memory and popular culture take center stage, where knowledge crosses generations and new languages are created each year. A manifestation born in diverse territories and communities, taking over the Avenida and thrilling the world.

This exhibition is for those who have a beloved samba school, know every samba, parade down the Avenida, and cry during the score reading. For those who wait all year for Carnival. And also for those who have never entered a school's hall, never stepped onto Sapucaí, or never had the opportunity to feel this emotion up close.

Here, these worlds meet. The exhibition reveals what happens before the gates open, introduces the people and the knowledge that build the show, and invites every visitor to step into Carnival, with samba in their step and their heart racing to the sound of the drum section.

Along the path, visitors will discover the origins of samba, explore the schools and their territories, step behind the scenes of a parade, follow the work of carnival designers and artisans, design a costume, feel the power of the drum section, learn how to samba, compose a samba-enredo, and experience the thrill of stepping onto the Avenida.

More than telling the story of Rio's Carnival, this exhibition wants to make you feel Carnival. Its collective strength, its creativity, its memory, its capacity to transform and move people.

Because the greatest show on Earth does not begin when the gates of Sapucaí open. It is built all year long by thousands of people. And as expressed in the verses of Imperatriz Leopoldinense's 1981 theme: “If only life were like this: to dream, smile, sing, dance samba...”

Now it is your turn to experience this story. The drum section is already playing, samba is in the air, and the Avenida is waiting for you.
